A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
At least 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives said.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "appalled" by the security action, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.
State officials confirmed at least 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.
